Health insurance is a new concept in Bangladesh. Health insurance plans offered by insurance companies in Bangladesh are very limited. However, it contributes a negligible portion of the population and contributes little to finance (less than 1%) The problems associated with this type of finance include low coverage due to the high cost of premiums and often available to urban populations employed to work with the formal sector. Vulnerable groups are often excluded for adverse selection. Poor and low-income people can't afford private insurance.
Currently, a number of community-based projects organized by NGOs and local hospitals are being carried out at the community level. The schemes are integrated in the sense that they are insurers as well as service providers. These projects have had dubious success in limited areas, but the overall contribution to the total national expenditure is small or negligible.
